Human-Nature Delegation - Kampung Sting, Sarawak

We are seeking to engage a partnership of one Malaysian and one UK (Civil Society Organisation and/or Arts Organisation) to support the curation and delivery of a pilot Human-Nature Storytelling Fellowship for two UK and two Malaysian artists and creative practitioners.

About this opportunity

The British Council has launched a new global programme, Culture Responds to Global Challenges. Through this strand of work, we support artists, creative practitioners, organisations, and policymakers to respond to global challenges and support sustainable development.

In Malaysia, the British Council will run Human-Nature: a 3-year arts programme that will enable UK and Malaysian artists, organisations, scientists, and academics to research and collaborate to better understand Human’s relationships with nature and with each other.

Since October 2023, the Human-Nature programme has produced a Community Engagement Guide, and with the support of three Malaysia organisations who work at the intersection of arts, community and climate, the programme conducted a 10-day delegation with seven UK art organisation leaders and curators to engage with over 250 stakeholders across peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah.

Human-Nature Storytelling Fellowship

The voices and stories of communities impacted by climate change need to be heard. These stories hold the narratives of impacts, loss, trauma, but also hopes, opportunities and keys to finding solutions to climate adaptation through traditional knowledge and practices. Artists and creatives can play a role: create awareness, share stories, convert science and data into relatable narratives and messages. Telling these stories through artistic and cultural responses will require commitment, knowledge and understanding, engagement with communities, ethics and skills. The fellowship programme will be a pilot project that will equip artists and story tellers to gain these skills and opportunities.

We are calling for one Malaysian and one UK arts and climate organisation to form a partnership that will lead the Human-Nature Storytelling Fellowship with the British Council Malaysia. This five-month fellowship will see the hosting partners collaborate on developing, organising, and delivering a mentorship programme that will provide a platform for 4 fellows to work together and individually on developing their storytelling skills. The selected partners will curate a programme that provides mentorship and training to the fellows on climate issues, multidisciplinary initiatives in communities, needs and opportunities in their locality, as well as develop a community of practice network and a sharing event at the end of the programme.

Whilst prior collaboration is not necessary, the two partners are required to submit a joint proposal.

Objectives of the Partnership: Human-Nature Storytellers Fellowship

The hosting partners of Human-Nature Storytelling Fellowship will collaborate on developing, organising and delivering a mentorship programme that will provide a platform for 4 fellows to work together and individually on developing their storytelling skills.

The fellowship partnership objectives for the 2 host partners are:

  • Develop organisation’s skills and capacity to collaborate internationally and embed arts and climate into their practice.
  • Create a network of artists, climate experts, academics and initiate a community of practice.
  • Collaborate internationally and expand their own networks.

The host partners are expected to:

  • Design, deliver and evaluate the pilot fellowship programme with support from the British Council Arts team in Malaysia.
  • Support, enable and develop the capacity for at least 4 fellows to explore, understand and tell the stories of how communities in both regions relates to their environments and adapt to climate change through arts, culture and multi-disciplinary approaches by providing fellow artists with the context, access to communities, guidance on ethics and engagement rules with the communities in their respective countries.
  • Provide fellow artists with support and logistics.
  • Mentor the fellow artists by organising learning sessions/workshops with experts in the fields of arts and climate: They will be responsible for sharing with the fellows the work they do in creative climate action with the communities, the issues and challenges they face, the solutions they work on, programming visits to communities, and create a programme that allows fellows to meet with all the stakeholders where they need to research and understand their contexts
  • As a cohort, hosting partner organisations and fellows will also be responsible for co-creating a sharing event and activating a network or community of practice between the fellows, the arts communities in UK and MY and the hosting partners. The network aims to continue the exchanges and connections beyond the project timeline and should be a space for networking, sharing knowledge and opportunities.
