The British Council supported the screening of A Northern Soul, a documentary by British filmmaker Sean McAllister, for the 2019 edition of Freedom Film Festival. Sean joined the screening for a Q&A via video call.

Film synopsis: Sean McAllister returns to his hometown of Hull, as curator of its UK City of Culture opening. Back living with his 90-year-old parents and reflecting on changes to a city hit by cuts in public spending and divided by Brexit, Sean is drawn to the fringes of the town where he encounters Steve — a struggling warehouse worker with a dream.

The theme for FFF 2019 was “Harga Naik, Gaji Maintain” (loosely translated to “The prices go up, the salaries stay the same”), focusing on economic inequalities in different sectors. The festival ran from 20–28 September and was held at PJ Live Arts in Jaya One.
