Bee-Man is a Connections Through Culture 2023-24 project, directed by Irene Yap and mentored by Sean McAllister

This film project explores the intricate relationship between humans and bees, demonstrating how traditional beekeeping practices can harmonise with modern sustainability efforts, benefiting both communities and the environment.

The film premiered with two preview screenings – one at Pesta Filem Kota Bharu and another at Kino Fest Penang. Both events were met with enthusiastic reactions, sparking meaningful discussion on conversation efforts, and providing constructive feedback.

Building Partnerships, Community, and Advocacy

The filming has led to connections with key conservation initiatives such as the Malaysian Nature Society and The Habitat Penang Hill. Additionally, engagements with indigenous communities have provided core insights into traditional and sustainable practices. Future plans include beekeeping workshops and advocacy campaigns aimed at raising the public awareness of native bee conservation and encouraging bee-friendly practices in urban spaces.

What began as a documentary on Malaysia’s native bees has evolved into bee workshops, a photobook, advocacy, and community engagement, all with the collective goal of fostering a deeper appreciation and conservation of native bees.

Stay tuned for the latest updates on Bee-Man and the upcoming film release.
